Dramatic footage shows hurricane hunters flying their plane into the eye of Hurricane Erin
Footage released by NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters captured the dramatic moment their plane flew into the eye of Hurricane Erin, as the storm grew to a Category 5 on August 16. On Sunday, August 17, Erin had weakened to a Category 4 storm as it’s outer bands lashed Puerto Rico, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The NHC forecast heavy rainfall through Sunday across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. It said the rain could lead to “locally considerable flash and urban flooding, along with landslides or mudslides.” The storm was expected to produce “life-threatening surf and rip currents along the beaches of the Bahamas, much of the east coast of the US, and Atlantic Canada next week,” NHC said.
