Cars swept away as flash flooding slams Crete
Devastating flash floods struck the Greek island of Crete on Thursday, October 1, causing severe infrastructure damage and sweeping away vehicles across the area. Eyewitness footage captured by tourist Benjamin Collier in Kato Gouves shows raging torrents of water rushing alongside a street, engulfing parked cars and dragging them away. "We were waiting to be picked up for a day trip from outside our hotel when we saw a wall of water coming toward us and could see cars being washed along," Collier told Storyful, adding that he was "shocked and saddened to think hotel staff lost their cars." According to the Hellenic Weather Service, severe weather conditions are expected to persist across the region through Sunday, October 4.
